Each day thousands of cars rush through the Pigeon River Gorge and past the Waterville Road exit at the Tennessee/North Carolina State Line. However, most people probably don’t realize the natural wonders lying just a couple of miles away inside the Big Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Driving between Gatlinburg and Cosby, there is a section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where it's worthwhile turning off the road. Greenbrier is a great place to get up close to a wild stretch of river, find wildflowers and catch the fall colors.

From the observation deck at Clingman's Dome you get a real sense of the beauty throughout East Tennessee (and Western North Carolina). While more than 9-million people come to the Smokies each year, it's one of a handful of national parks all within a couple hours drive of Knoxville.
